Brindisi has a wonderful natural harbour that, thanks to its conformation and geographic position (latitude 40°39'00'' North, longitude 17°58'00'' East), has always been known as one of the safest ports in the Adriatic Sea. The exclusive and articulated morphology of the natural harbour of Brindisi, with its deer head shape is the outcome of the outfall of water streams such as the Cillarese Channel and the Palmarini-Patri Channel that end respectively in the western and the eastern basin of the port. Those two streams constitute a river basin where the sea flows into. The harbour is located in a wide funnel-shaped bay wedged into the coast. Since ancient times Brindisi based its wealth on the harbour activities thanks to the strategic geographic position and conformation that made this town the natural Gate to the East.
